Chlorine and Kinks

So if you guys didn’t know, I worked this summer as a YMCA camp counselor and one of the requirements of the job is that we get in the pool with the campers. Yall, they go swimming everyday. EVERYDAY. 1) I cannot swim, 2) My hair is not equipped for that. I was more worried about my hair breaking off than drowning in the pool (so serious). These past two months I took extra steps to ensure that my hair would retain its moisture. In a spray bottle I mixed water, coconut oil, and Shea Moisture’s coconut & hibiscus curl and style milk. I sprayed my hair every morning and night. I also used a swim cap. Mind you the swim cap really isn’t that effective if you’re going under the water. The point is that the chlorine is not in direct contact with your hair. For those who don’t know, chlorine makes your hair dry and brittle. Brittle hair is a nightmare, especially if you have type 4 hair. It’s devastating. I was not having that so I feel that combining these two steps with my regular routine of weekly washing and deep conditioning prevented my hair from drying out.

–> 85% water in the spray bottle, 1/2 scoop of coconut oil, 1/2 scoop of styling milk

–> I purchased my swim cap from Dick’s Sporting Goods for about $14

–> Let me know what you do to protect your hair while swimming! 🙂
